The Larkspur ferry fare to San Francisco is now $14 on paper and $9.50 with Clipper or a contactless bank card. Both prices took effect July 1, 2026. Most Greenbrae riders have already absorbed that change. Three other things will matter more between now and New Year's Day. The terminal lot charges by the clock. The ferry's holiday calendar doesn't match the parking calendar. And the one flat-rate deal on the route has a set end date. Taken together, the timing of a trip now shapes its price more than the ticket does.
The parking lot runs on a morning clock
Outside a short list of parking holidays, the Larkspur terminal and overflow lots charge $2 for any vehicle on weekdays from 5:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Parking is free after 1 p.m. on weekdays and all day on weekends. Golden Gate's Larkspur Ferry parking page adds one detail that is easy to miss. On a fee day, any vehicle in either lot between 5:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. owes the fee, no matter when its parking session began. A driver who pulls in at 12:40 p.m. for a late lunch in the city pays the same $2 as a 6 a.m. commuter. One who waits until 1:05 p.m. pays nothing.
The same page lists the rules that matter most for holiday outings:
- Overnight parking is not permitted.
- Vehicles left more than 24 hours can be fined or towed at the owner's expense.
- Spaces are first-come, first-served, and 30-day permit holders are not guaranteed a space.
- Daily parking uses Zone 111, and 30-day permits use Zone 114.
A late-December evening in the city, with a return on one of the last boats, fits within those rules. A trip that turns into an overnight stay with family across the bay does not. The car needs another plan.
The holiday calendars don't line up
Golden Gate publishes the ferry's holiday service on one page and the parking fee holidays on another, and the two lists don't match. The lot is free on Thanksgiving Day, the day after Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day. But the Golden Gate holiday calendar shows no ferry service at all on Thanksgiving or Christmas. That leaves one day this season when the boats run and the parking is free because of a holiday.
| Date | Golden Gate Ferry | Weekday parking fee, 5 a.m. to 1 p.m. |
|---|---|---|
| Wed., Nov. 11, Veterans Day | Weekday service | Applies |
| Thu., Nov. 26, Thanksgiving | No service | Waived |
| Fri., Nov. 27 | Weekend service | Waived |
| Thu., Dec. 24, Christmas Eve | Weekday service | Applies |
| Fri., Dec. 25, Christmas | No service | Waived |
| Thu., Dec. 31, New Year's Eve | Weekday service | Applies |
| Fri., Jan. 1, 2027 | No service | Waived |
The Friday after Thanksgiving is the standout. The ferry runs its weekend schedule that day, and the lot charges nothing all day. Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve are the opposite. The ferry runs a normal weekday schedule both days, and neither is on the parking holiday list, so the $2 morning fee applies. Veterans Day works the same way. Anyone heading to a midday holiday lunch in the city on Dec. 24 can avoid the fee by aiming for a boat after 1 p.m. Plenty of others will probably have the same idea, and spaces are first-come, first-served.
The last day to buy the $10 combo is Halloween
The Friday-after-Thanksgiving gap is a small, recurring quirk. The bigger change this season is the end of a fare product. Golden Gate's Sept. 1, 2026 rider alert confirms that the Sail & Rail pilot is ending. The last day to buy tickets is Oct. 31, 2026, and the last day to use them is Nov. 30, 2026. The $10 ticket covered a one-way trip on the SMART train plus a one-way trip on the Golden Gate Ferry. SMART and Golden Gate ran it as a pilot to decide whether it should become permanent.
For Greenbrae households, the combo made the SMART platform at Larkspur and the ferry slip one trip with one price. That worked in both directions, whether the day started in the city or somewhere up the rail line. The October news from Marin Transit doesn't name a replacement. It points riders to Clipper, which gives a $2.85 transfer discount on inter- and intra-agency transfers. Riders with an existing Sail & Rail ticket can reach SMART Customer Service at [email protected] or (707) 794-3330.
The purchase deadline falls on a busy Saturday at the terminal. Marin Country Mart, at 2257 Larkspur Landing Circle, holds its Halloween Spectacular on Oct. 31 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The day includes an 11 a.m. courtyard costume contest and trick-or-treating around the Mart. Because it's a weekend, the terminal lot is free all day. The Mart's Friday family movie nights also run at 6 p.m. through Oct. 30, well after the parking fee stops.
The replacement depends on which Clipper you carry
Clipper's transfer discount does the combo's job in a different form, and it doesn't work the same for everyone yet. The Metropolitan Transportation Commission said Next Generation Clipper launched Dec. 10, 2025. Under the new system, a rider pays full fare on the first operator. Each additional agency used within two hours is discounted by up to $2.85. MTC uses SMART to Golden Gate Ferry as its example of a qualifying trip. Clipper's agency page for Marin Transit lists free inbound transfers and $2.85 discounted outbound transfers.
The rollout isn't finished. In its Aug. 26, 2026 report to the Commission, MTC said bulk migration of existing cards was still on hold. The new system had more than 3 million accounts and handled 60% of Clipper-paid transactions. Some riders already have the new account and the new discount. Others with an older card may not get the transfer benefit the Marin Transit notice describes. If a trip relies on that discount, check the account status in Clipper before the Sail & Rail tickets run out on Nov. 30.
The base fare differences are large enough to plan around. These are Golden Gate's Larkspur fares since July 1, 2026:
- Adult paper ticket: $14.00
- Adult Clipper or contactless bank card: $9.50
- Youth 5 to 18, seniors 65 and over, riders with disabilities, and Medicare cardholders: $7.00
- Clipper START: $4.75
- Children 4 and under: free, limit two per adult
For two adults making a round trip, paper tickets cost $56 and card fares cost $38. That $18 difference is nine days of morning parking. Golden Gate also kept Giants Ferry fares unchanged this year while most other fares rose by up to 25 cents.
Some riders reach the ferry by bus instead of driving. Golden Gate Transit's service change on Sept. 13, 2026 left ferry service unchanged. It did remove two Friday Route 132 trips: the 5:52 a.m. departure from San Anselmo Hub and the 5:41 p.m. departure from San Francisco. Anyone whose Friday connection used either trip needs a new plan before the holiday weekends.
What hasn't changed at the slip yet
The holiday routine of 2026 runs on the current boats and the current lot. Two longer-term projects are moving more slowly than their earlier timelines suggested. The Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District approved a base contract of about $92.4 million for two new Liwa-class vessels, as the Marin Independent Journal reported in December 2025. The paper said the first was expected to arrive in 2027, with a replacement for the Del Norte to follow. Golden Gate's Ferry Operations Today page describes the Liwa design as a 500-passenger high-speed catamaran expected in service in 2027, with a standardized fleet expected by 2033. Both dates are still projections.
Parking capacity is still under study. A November 2025 amendment to the Larkspur Ferry Service and Parking Expansion Study widened the options. They now include parking structures phased to demand, access upgrades that don't add parking, a combination of the two, and a no-build alternative. The amendment covers environmental clearance, not approval to build. That 2025 schedule projected a draft environmental impact report in late summer 2026. The District's project page still lists the draft-EIR milestones as "Date TBD." This season's trips will use the lots that exist now, with the 1 p.m. cutoff and first-come spaces.
